Thank you for the great podcast. A couple questions regarding this; are there any asana that are considered pre-requisites before attempting this posture for the first time?

It seems that the student would need to be very comfortable in Hanumansana (forward splits) and Bakasana(Crow)at minimum.

Thanks for your thoughtful question! Hurdle pose is definitely a more intermediate to advanced posture, but as with all yoga postures, some come easier than others depending on your own body and flexibility. As we describe in the podcast, it’s great to start off in runner’s lunge. If and only if you’re comfortable there, give the more advanced version of the posture a try. And no, it’s not necessary for the student to be comfortable in forward splits pose to accomplish this posture. Our model is relatively flexible, so it’s easy for her to straighten her front leg in the posture – but it’s not necessary to straighten your leg to accomplish the posture. The key is balancing on your arms, and then working toward straightening your front leg and lifting your back foot off the mat.

As with any posture, if it’s painful, back out – otherwise, just have fun with it and see what happens. Thanks again for your feedback, and this gives us a great idea; we’ll consider including preparatory poses with our podcasts!

Thanks for the great instructional podcast. I had been trying the hurdle pose off a Shiva Rea DVD and couldn’t quite get it. I watched this a few times and the first time I tried, I went right up! Thanks for sharing and breaking down the move into distinct parts. Shanti!
